30th April, 1804
Our party made camp last night along the banks of a humble stream the locals call the Souris River. The morning dawned crisp and we prepared to investigate a nearby settlement named Minot. What strange happenings awaited us in this frontier town?
First, our arrival coincided with a remarkable sight – a colossal steam locomotive termed the “2816” pulling into the very heart of Minot on what is called the “Final Spike Steam Tour.” The iron horse was celebrated by many, who gathered to experience its splendor up close. Such inventions would have seemed inconceivable during my own expedition westward.
Later, my men and I sought sustenance and discovered culinary curiosities at an establishment called “Off The Vine.” We sampled dishes named the “Smokey Mountain Bacon Dip” and “The Hawaiian” – the former a rich blend of pork, cheese, and fiery peppers; the latter featuring roasted pineapple combined with more savory pork. Truly novel fare compared to our typical trail rations.
The residents of Minot also appear to highly anticipate what they term “National Oatmeal Cookie Day” on the morrow. A humble baked good, but one which will provide sweet relief from the dusty trail, no doubt. This “National Day Calendar” is evidently a chronicle of regional celebrations lost on my companions and myself.
We shall resume our journey westward on the morning tide. But the singular experiences of this day in the heart of the Northern Plains shall not be soon forgotten.
